but what about thinking about all the countries where you would like to be and where you would like to live (but you cannot because you have this canadian citizenship)???

As we can choose our religion (or to not believe) why can't we choose our nationality or our citizenship?

Because it would be called
Anarchy?!?!

Italy, Switzerland, Germany (this one is for Valérie) and many other europeans countries that I'll not name because this post will look like an Atlas... ;)However, I have a personal attachment to these ones but if we are talking about better life quality, any scandinavian countries will do also.

Canada has been first considering quality of life for 10 years in a row, no other country has beaten that record.
Now Canada is in fourth place.
We are talking about the most progressive country in the G7, living standards Canada is number 1, Human Development Canada is number one in the G7 and fourth in the World, Quality of Life Rank
Canada has the best overall quality of life among the G-7.
Cost of Living
Canada has the lowest cost of living in the G-7.
Environnent
As measured by an index of environmental sustainability, Canada´s ranks highest among the G-7 in addressing environmental concerns such as air & water pollution, land protection, and greenhouse emissions.
Security & Justice
Canada tops the G-7 as a safe place to live and conduct business with the most fairly administered judicial system.
Equal Opportunity & Multiculturalism
Canada ranks first among the G-7 in providing equal opportunities for individuals and ranks among world leaders with immigration laws highly conducive to hiring foreign labour.

Julie, Canada is by far one of the best place if not the best place in the world.
I understand that you try to find some bogus reason, as a separatist, to bash Canada to justify your separation.
But you have to get real.
An independent Quebec will not even come close to what the Canadian federation is right now, economically, natural recourses and quality of life standards.
Facts are facts.
If you want a fleur de lys passport and brag about Scandinavian countries with passion.. well you go champ! Unfortunately for you, some of us consider reason as primordial, not passion.

i have to say I agree with some of your comment....

Yes, you compare Canada only with the G7, but if you compare with all the countries of the world, we are not first...

In the OCDE report on the gender gap, Canada is 7th...

Le Canada est l'un des pays occidentaux où l'on emprisonne le plus de gens, selon des données publiées par le ministère fédéral de la Sécurité publique.

In 2004, unemployment in Canada, at 7.3%, stood just above the OECD average of 6.9%.

Economic Survey Canada 2004
Recent economic performance has been solid and macroeconomic policies are appropriate. However, challenges remain for competition policy, taxation, productivity, employment insurance...

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development ranked Canada 19th out of 30 developed countries for its funding of primary and secondary schooling in 2001.

Canada fell from third to eighth place on the United Nations' annual human development report after spending most of the 1990s in the top spot.

Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United States are all ahead of Canada on the United Nations Human Development Index.

Canada, US rank lowest on climate scorecard:Canada is in penultimate position because greenhouse gas emissions have risen by 21% against the Kyoto benchmark when the requirement is for a 6% decrease, per capita and industrial energy consumption is very high, and electricity from renewable sources (mainly very large-scale hydro) is unambitious compared to others in the class.

Everything is relative, it depends of your sources...

I was not pleading for Quebec separation, I was just saying that I do not share this so optimistic point of view on Canada and, for some personal reason, I feel myself more at home in Europe...

"Le Canada est l'un des pays occidentaux où l'on emprisonne le plus de gens, selon des données publiées par le ministère fédéral de la Sécurité publique."

And your point is? Not every country is neighbour to the United States of America, we have one of the world's most effective rehabilitation and justice systems and we have a low rate of criminality in constant diminution since 1990.

"Canada fell from third to eighth place on the United Nations' annual human development report after spending most of the 1990s in the top spot. "
We are presently in fourth place; we stood in the first place for 10 years in a row.
Name me a country who even came close including your Scandinavian countries.

"I was not pleading for Quebec separation, I was just saying that I do not share this so optimistic point of view on Canada"
How can you not be optimistic about a country that has one of the best quality of life in the world and the most progressive country within the riches countries in the world (G8)?

With all due respect, your plea is simply BS.
You are looking for perfection; we live in a great country, not a perfect country.

Il est beau de voir que nous vivons dans un pays ou un futur pays (dépendant de la position politique) où les gens peuvent avoir des opinions si divergentes et vivre pour continuer à en discuter.

You're so right Chrys.

I'm not looking for perfection, I know nothing is perfect... as I said previously, I'm just looking for the place where I feel at home... If you feel at home in Canada and are so proud of it, stay there! I was just saying that I feel better elsewhere and that's why I prefer to stay in Europe (by the way I do not live in Canada right now)...

P.S. I will not continue this battle of numbers to see where Canada is ranking because it will be a debate without end... The good thing with numbers is that you can always use them to make them tell what you want... but feeling are more difficult to change and if I do not feel well in Canada, I should have the opportunity to change citizenship, I'm sure they will be people who will be happy to replace me and get my citizenship...

feelingS and not feeling, sorry but I still have problem with "azerty" sometimes... ;)
